Nonprofit jobs are ones that serve the public through their organization’s mission. Many non-profits tend to focus on social issues, whether that is women’s rights, healthcare, poverty, etc. Due to a wide range of causes a nonprofit may support there are many different opportunities for employment.
Altogether, nonprofits are the third largest industry behind retail and food services. It is also the third largest generator of payroll income in the country. Being a large sector means more competition for new applicants, but it also means more opportunities. Nonprofits have experienced rapid growth in employment in the past few years. Due to the rise of online social media, social media platforms have created new avenues for nonprofits to connect with potential donors and spread the organization’s mission. Many positions in the nonprofit sector are expected to experience growth over the next few years.
Nonprofit companies are structured similarly to for profit organizations so nonprofits will typically have management positions along with jobs in accounting, human resources, and marketing.
Nonprofits also employ the help of volunteers to help carry out their mission, or work with other occupations in different sectors (doctors, nurses, etc.) for outreach or service programs.
The type of environment that a nonprofit worker is in is dependent on the job. Since many nonprofits operate similarly to other organizations, many nonprofit jobs on the business end will take place in a corporate office setting and will be full-time. Other nonprofit jobs may require that an employee be involved outside an office, attending events and participating in social service programs to promote their company’s mission.
Most jobs will require at least a bachelor’s degree in a major related to the type of work that you will be doing. Having a degree in business is also good to have, especially for workers in managerial positions. Master’s degrees and undergraduate certificates in nonprofit management is also available from some educational institutions.
Other types of degrees that are beneficial to applicants looking for jobs in this sector are public relations, journalism, communications, or English.
Internships and previous work experience are also important in obtaining these positions.
Many nonprofits rely on volunteers to help meet their mission goals. Due to the nature of the organization, nonprofits suffer from the issue of offering pay that is considered too low by many. Nonprofits often walk a fine line between overpaying or understaff, as providing excessive salaries for certain positions may cause some public backlash, and underpaying hampers their ability to recruit the best employee.
Given the large variety of employment available in nonprofit, salaries will vary. For certain positions, such as fundraisers, the median annual wage is around $55,640. For social and community service managers, the annual median profit is around $64,100, though this will vary greatly from $39,730 to $109,990.
The requirements for a certain occupation in the nonprofit sector will be specific to the title. Given that the point of a nonprofit is to serve the public, those involved in public activities should have good communication and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational and planning skills is also important in order to succeed in organizing charitable campaigns and events.
