Customer service is a large field that extends to every industry. Customer service representatives often act as the frontline between the company and the customer, providing information on a company’s products and services and providing solutions to customer problems. Employment of customer service representatives is expected to grow 5% from 2016 to 2026. There are many opportunities in this field and candidates with experience using computer software applications and possess good customer-service skills will have the best outcome when applying. With enough customer service experience, representatives may advance to supervisory roles.

Many customer service representatives spend most of their time interacting with the client. Customer service jobs may vary depending on the industry and position that they hold. For customer service representatives in retail, they may be standing throughout most of their shift and may be required to do some moderate lifting. Other customer service representatives may be sitting in front of a computer screen and handling customer correspondence over the phone or through email. Most of the time they will work in an office setting, but some work remote. Customer service schedules may also vary widely. Many companies may require that representatives work different morning, afternoon and evening shifts.
The median hourly wage for customer service representatives is around $15.81 an hour. The lowest 10% earned less than $10.27 in 2017 and the highest 10% earned more than $26.12.
Customer service representatives must have excellent communication and customer-service skills. Representatives should be able to listen to customers and address their needs in order to solve a customer’s problem. This helps contribute to customer loyalty and retention.
