The number of students in school is expected to increase over the next coming decade. With this increase in student population, the demand for teachers is needed throughout all levels of educations. For most teaching positions job growth is projected at around 8% over the next few years. For Postsecondary education that growth is projected around 15 percent.
Teachers educate and teach students important skills that prepares them for life post-education. Their responsibilities include creating lesson plans to teach school subjects, teach students how to study and communicate with others, grade student assignments, communicate with parents about their student’s progress, and develop and enforce class rules to teach students proper behavior.
Postsecondary teachers who instruct students beyond the high school level may also conduct research and publish secondary papers and books. Some full-time professors, especially those with tenure, are often expected to spend more time on research or serve on college and university committees.
Teachers generally work during school hours when students are present. They may meet with students, parents, and other teachers before and after school to discuss student progress or express concerns over issues affecting the student. They often spend weekends and evenings grading papers and preparing lessons.
Many teachers may work the traditional 10-month school year with the 2-month break during the summer. Some may teach in summer programs.
Postsecondary teachers may teach classes at several colleges and university and generally have a flexible schedule.
Teachers will need at least a bachelor’s degree in a related subject that they plan to teach. Applicants with degrees in another subject can still become teachers. Applicants must complete a teacher’s education program to obtain certification to teach. These programs teach future teachers how to present information to students and how to work with students at different age levels and of varying abilities and backgrounds. They will also work with mentor teachers to get experience in a class setting. Some state require that teachers earn a master’s degree after receiving their certification and job training.
Postsecondary teachers who typically work at a 4-year college must typically have a doctoral degree in their field. Some institutions may require teachers to have other work experience to be hired.
The median annual wage for teachers teaching from kindergarten to high school is around $58,000. For postsecondary teachers, the median annual wage is around $76,000.
All states require that teachers be licensed or certified in the specific grade level that they will teach. Private school teachers do not typically need a license. Requirements to be eligible for a license vary from state to state, but general requirements include a bachelor’s degree with a minimum grade point average, completion of a teacher preparation program and supervised experience in teaching, passing a background check, and passing a general teaching certificate test.
Teachers are also required to complete annual professional development classes to keep their license or certification.
